Kitchen Faucet Repair – Unless you have an issue with money, you are not likely to be someone who wants to spend money unnecessarily. As such, before you call in professional help when the faucet in your kitchen is faulty, you should try to carry out kitchen faucet repair on your own first. This is not a difficult and below is a list of essential tips to help you out.
The first thing that you have to do when you are carrying out kitchen faucet repair is to open up the faucet mechanism. You have to find out what is causing the problem. Before you attempt to open the faucet, you should ensure that both the hot and cold water pipes are already shut off. You do not want to have water sprouting at you and all over the house while you are fixing the leak.
In order to open the mechanism, you need to unscrew the Allen screw which holds the mechanism together. Your goal is to take out the handle from the rotary ball. However, what can you do if you are unable to open it up?
Instead of merely giving up on your DIY project and heading off to get a brand new faucet that can easily cost you over a hundred dollars, you should try other ways of opening it up. Most of the time, you will need to get the faucet opened in order to get the handle out, which would then allow you to get to the worn rubber seats that are likely to have caused the leakage.
You can spray the screw with lubricating oil over a few days and try to unscrew it again. If this still does not work, it is likely that the screw is stuck and the easiest way is for you to break the head of the Allen screw and drill out the remaining portion. Don’t worry because the screw is only going to cost you less then twenty cents to get it replaced.
Once you have removed the handle, you can now gain access to the faucet mechanism. It is usually the seal of the unit that is worn out and can no longer fit the seal tightly. This is what caused the leak to happen. So what you need to do now is to find the seals in the faucet. To do this, you will just have to pull the stem to get the mechanism out and there are your black, plastic seals. These are the ones which have to be replaced in order to fix the leak and you can easily get them at your local hardware stores for a few dollars.
You will just have to use the nose pliers to pull the seals straight up. Then replace them with the new ones you have bought. Again, use the pliers to push the new seals back into the slot. To make the mechanism work better, you can lubricate the seals before you replace the handle and the Allen screw.
There, it is really not difficult to carry out kitchen faucet repair on your own. However, it is just like any DIY project that you might undertake. It takes time and effort but it can also be a lot of fun too, so long as you do not give up easily when you encounter any problems.
